In January 2019, the Badja Savings Group was created in Badja, a small village about an hour North of Lomé, the capital city in south Togo. All the members of the group are from Badja village and heard about IADES and the benefits of village savings groups from others around the village. Since January the group has now grown to 13 members.
They created the group for two main reasons. Firstly, all the members of the savings group wanted to invest in and further develop their businesses. They needed capital to build a truly sustainable livelihood, but were excluded from traditional financial services. They also wanted to benefit from the mutual support they can get from other members of the group. They wanted to empower each other through the group. They also hope that they will be able to improve their businesses and make them more profitable, bringing a better quality of life to themselves, their families and the whole community.
One of the key aspects of being in a savings group and working with IADES, Deki's field partner is the technical and social training that comes with it. The training is designed to ensure that our the whole community can maximise their chances of success.
